How to Free Up Storage Space on Android

Running low on storage stops your phone from receiving updates, slows down apps, and prevents you from taking photos. These steps help you reclaim space without losing what matters.
1. See what is using your storage
Go to Settings → Storage. Android shows a breakdown by category: Apps, Photos & videos, Audio, Downloads, and Other. Tap each category to drill into what is taking up the most space. This gives you a clear target before you start deleting anything.
2. Clean out your Downloads folder
Open your Files app and go to the Downloads folder. This folder accumulates APK installers, PDFs, images from apps, and other files that are easy to forget. Sort by size and delete anything you no longer need. It is common to find gigabytes of old files here that have not been touched in months.
3. Back up and remove photos and videos
Photos and videos are almost always the biggest storage consumers. Open Google Photos → Library → Utilities → Free up space on this device. This removes photos that have already been backed up to Google Photos from your phone's local storage, freeing space while keeping them accessible through the cloud.
4. Clear app caches in bulk
Settings → Storage → Cached data (on older Android versions this shows the total cache size and lets you clear it all at once). On newer Android, you clear caches per app: Settings → Apps → sort by Size → tap the largest apps and clear their cache individually. Streaming apps like YouTube, Spotify, and Netflix often cache gigabytes of content locally.
5. Uninstall apps you rarely open
Settings → Apps → sort by Size. Look at the biggest apps and honestly consider which ones you have not opened in the past month. Uninstalling a single large game can free up 2–5 GB. For apps you want to keep but rarely use, you can also try offloading them — some phones let you uninstall the app but keep its data so it reinstalls quickly if you need it again.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to delete files from the Downloads folder?
Yes. The Downloads folder holds files you chose to download — APK installers, documents, images from apps. None of these are system files. Delete anything you no longer need. If you are unsure about a file, you can move it to a folder on your computer before deleting it from the phone.
Will clearing an app's cache delete my account or settings?
No. Cache is temporary data — images, thumbnails, and session files — that apps regenerate automatically. Clearing the cache does not affect your login, settings, or saved data inside the app. The app may load slightly slower the first time after clearing the cache while it rebuilds its temporary files.
How much free storage should I keep on my Android phone?
Try to keep at least 1–2 GB free at all times for the operating system to function smoothly. When storage drops below around 10%, Android may start warning you, and very low storage causes apps to crash and prevents system updates from installing.
