How to Fix Android Battery Drain

Battery not lasting the day any more? A handful of settings changes and a check of which apps are using the most power can make a significant difference.

1. Find what is draining the battery

Settings → Battery → Battery usage. This shows which apps consumed the most power since the last full charge. An app sitting at the top when you have barely used it is misbehaving. Restrict its background activity or uninstall it.

2. Reduce screen brightness and timeout

The screen is usually the single largest drain. Enable adaptive brightness (Settings → Display → Adaptive brightness) and shorten the screen timeout to 30 seconds or 1 minute. On phones with AMOLED screens, switching to a dark theme also saves battery because dark pixels use less power.

3. Limit location and background data

Settings → Location → App permissions. Change any app that does not need constant location from Allow all the time to Only while using the app. Also go to Settings → Apps, select each app → Mobile data & Wi-Fi, and turn off Background data for apps that do not need to sync in the background.

4. Use Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery

Settings → Battery → Battery Saver. You can turn it on manually or set it to activate automatically at a certain percentage. Also enable Adaptive Battery (Settings → Battery → Adaptive Battery) — over a few days Android learns which apps you use regularly and restricts the ones you rarely open.

5. Check battery health

Batteries degrade over time and hold less charge after hundreds of charge cycles. Some phones show battery health in Settings → Battery → Battery health. If the capacity has dropped below 80%, the battery itself is the problem and replacement is the only lasting fix. Most phone repair shops replace batteries affordably.

Frequently asked questions

Does keeping Wi-Fi on drain the battery?

Slightly, but less than you might expect. Wi-Fi uses less power than mobile data for the same amount of data transfer, so leaving Wi-Fi on and connected to a known network actually saves battery compared to using 4G or 5G.

Should I let my phone battery go to zero?

No. Lithium batteries last longer when kept between 20% and 80%. Regularly draining to zero or charging to 100% repeatedly shortens the battery lifespan. Some phones have a charging limit option in Battery settings.

How many charge cycles does an Android battery last?

Most lithium batteries retain around 80% capacity after 500 full charge cycles. Daily charging means roughly 365 cycles per year, so significant degradation typically appears after 1–2 years of heavy use.
