How to Back Up Your Android Phone

Backing up your Android phone takes minutes and protects everything from photos to app data. Here is how to use Google Backup and what it does and does not cover.
1. Enable Google Backup
Settings → System → Backup → Back up to Google Drive. Turn this on and tap Back up now. Google Backup copies app data, call history, contacts, device settings, SMS messages, and photos (via Google Photos). The backup runs automatically when the phone is charging, connected to Wi-Fi, and idle.
2. Back up photos and videos
Open Google Photos → your profile icon → Photos settings → Backup. Turn Backup on and choose your upload quality. Storage Saver compresses photos slightly to save Google Drive space; Original quality counts against your 15 GB free allowance. Google Photos backs up in the background whenever you are on Wi-Fi.
3. Sync contacts and calendar
Settings → Accounts → your Google account → Account sync. Make sure Contacts and Calendar are toggled on. These sync to your Google account in real time, so they are always up to date on any device logged in to the same account.
4. What Google Backup does not cover
Google Backup does not include files stored in Downloads, videos saved outside Google Photos, or data from apps that opt out of the backup API. To cover these, connect the phone to a PC and copy the Downloads folder manually, or use a third-party backup app. WhatsApp has its own backup system under its Settings → Chats → Chat backup.
5. Restore from a backup
When setting up a new or factory-reset Android phone, sign in to your Google account during setup and choose Restore from backup when prompted. Select the backup you want and the phone restores app data and settings automatically. Google Photos restores your photos when you open the app and sign in.

How much Google Drive space does Android backup use?
App data backed up by Google Backup does not count against your Google Drive storage limit. Google Photos storage does count unless you have a Pixel phone, which offers free original-quality backup.
Will my apps restore automatically?
Yes. During device setup, Android offers to reinstall apps from your backup. You need to sign in to each app again, and app data restores in the background over the following hours.
How do I back up WhatsApp on Android?
Open WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Back up. You can back up to Google Drive for cloud storage or to the phone's local storage. Use Google Drive backup so the backup survives a phone reset.
